The board of directors of the Port of Brussels has awarded the concession for the expansion and operation of the container terminal to Van Moer Logistics for a period of 20 years. Through this concession, the existing container terminal will triple in capacity from 16,700 m2 to 60,000 m2.

In addition to the terminal activities, the logistics player also envisages an additional warehouse of 15,000 m². After completion of the works, Van Moer Logistics will have a total logistics zone of 100,000 m² at the Port of Brussels, where the terminal and warehouses are directly connected.


The concession is ambitious in all areas: first, the development of container traffic, focusing on the further implementation of modal shift, and second, the development of sustainable urban logistics solutions with high added value for the Brussels Capital Region. All these factors support the transition to sustainable transport modes.

Van Moer Logistics will achieve these ambitions thanks to economic and environmental investments of 23.5 million euros. In the process, 144 jobs will eventually be created and Van Moer Logistics' ambition is to increase volumes via rail and waterway from 57,000 to 127,000 TEU (from 500,000 to 1 million tons of goods) over the next 10 years.

Intermodal strategy

The expansion of the container terminal in Brussels is part of the intermodal strategy of Van Moer Logistics, which is fully committed to inland shipping and has acquired and developed several terminals and quays since 2011.

The logistics service provider wants to continue to contribute to the realization of modal shift and sustainable logistics. In Brussels, the company sees possibilities of a.o. water-bound city distribution, with which it already has experience in Antwerp. Van Moer Logistics will join in the further sustainable development of the Brussels port area and the creation of employment. Finally, the extension of the concession in the Port of Brussels can be a springboard to develop cargo flows to and from Wallonia in the future.
