Three Flemish family businesses join forces to build new logistics park in Beringen

The official starting signal was given in Beringen for the construction of a brand-new logistics park with a 250,000 m² transhipment terminal. The site, strategically located on the Albert Canal, is being developed by three Flemish family businesses: Van Moer Logistics, Aertssen Group and Van Wellen Group.

The site will be a sustainable logistics hub for the storage, assembly and distribution of machinery and parts, containers and chemical products, and will give a significant boost to the local economy and employment. The city of Beringen enthusiastically welcomes the project as a new driver of industrial growth in the region. The construction work is being carried out by Bouwbedrijf Keulen H.

Joint investment in future-oriented logistics

The three family businesses are combining their experience and expertise to jointly operate the site in Beringen as a logistics centre. They are combining their strengths in (agricultural) construction and equipment logistics (Aertssen Logistics), multimodal transport, depot and storage (Van Moer Logistics) and real estate expertise and development of logistics real estate (Van Wellen Group).

The 250,000 m² site is being developed into a versatile logistics zone with modern warehouses covering more than 90,000 m², outdoor storage areas and a quay that enables direct transhipment by ship.

Containers can be unloaded directly from the ship and stored without additional road transport. This not only increases efficiency but also limits the impact on local traffic.

The 60,000 m² container terminal will have recesses for the storage of ISO tanks and will connect directly to its own quay. In addition, a Seveso classification is being sought. This will allow dangerous goods to be stored safely, which is an important asset in a region with several chemical companies.

Strategic location on the Albert Canal

The Albert Canal is one of Flanders' most important transport axes, handling more than 40 million tonnes of goods per year, the equivalent of millions fewer lorries on the road.

The location in Beringen offers the three companies direct access to the port of Antwerp and the European hinterland, and supports the ambition to transport more goods by water, thereby reducing congestion and CO2 emissions.

The three companies complement each other within this joint project and will each use the site based on their own expertise.

Van Moer Logistics uses the terminal as an additional link in its intermodal network. The connection with existing inland waterway terminals in Grobbendonk and Brussels, among other places, makes it possible to transport even more goods by water, thereby strengthening the sustainable supply chain.

Aertssen Logistics focuses on parts distribution and the handling of smaller machines that are transported to Beringen by inland waterway. The new location complements the existing sites in Kallo and Verrebroek and offers room for further growth in Belgium. In 2024, the company also opened a branch in Savannah (USA), expanding its expertise internationally.

Van Wellen Group, which specialises in property development and industrial infrastructure, is responsible for the development of the site, with an emphasis on energy efficiency, safety and sustainability.

Jo Van Moer, CEO of Van Moer Logistics:

‘With the terminal in Beringen, we are taking the next step in our intermodal strategy. The fact that we are achieving this together with two other strong Belgian family businesses makes it all the more valuable. It is a fine example of how cooperation enables sustainable growth.’

Local anchoring and employment

The project also creates new employment opportunities in the region. The site will directly and indirectly generate around 100 jobs in the logistics sector and related services. Local contractors, suppliers and technicians are also involved in the realisation.

Thanks to direct transhipment via the quay, the impact on road traffic will be minimal. The majority of goods will be transported by inland waterway, which will reduce CO₂ emissions and help to limit traffic congestion in Beringen.

The project is therefore not only an investment in water-bound logistics, but also in regional employment, mobility and future-oriented growth.
