Long-term partnership
The cooperation between Van Moer Logistics and Delhaize started in 2011, when the Antwerp-based logistics provider took over Delhaize's own transport company Wambacq-Peeters in Zellik. The transport contract is now being extended for the third time, this time until 2030.
"Van Moer Logistics has become a strategic transport partner of Delhaize. They provide about 20% of the daily transport capacity.” said Dirk Hautekeete* , Transport Director at Delhaize.
Van Moer Logistics provides an average of 100 trucks and 150 drivers who are deployed 24/7 for Delhaize. "Our drivers pick up the Delhaize trailers from the distribution centres in Zellik and Ninove and transport them to the various Delhaize branches in Belgium and Luxembourg. The new contract focuses on a flexible service, where we provide additional capacity to support the growing number of shops with Sunday openings," said Jo Van Moer, CEO and owner at Van Moer Logistics.
In addition, the logistics group has also been supplying 40 manned terminal vehicles handling trailer logistics at the distribution centre in Zellik since 2020. With this long-standing and intensive partnership, Van Moer Logistics employs a total of more than 200 people directly for Delhaize.
"Such a large group of drivers operating for the same customer requires good monitoring and guidance. Our drivers also have to apply specific instructions per branch in order to be able to unload and load correctly and safely on site, because return cargo is also processed by our drivers," says Jo Van Moer, CEO and owner at Van Moer Logistics.
Sustainable operations
"We want to make our transport more sustainable step by step in a financially and operationally feasible way. This is only possible on the basis of a strong partnership, and for us Van Moer Logistics is an ideal partner for this," says Jonathan Van Dessel, Director at Delhaize.
On the one hand, the drivers are personally coached to drive safely and ecologically, and on the other, the truck fleet is continuously modernised.
Both companies also actively contribute to the European Union's sustainability goals. To achieve this, LNG has been chosen as the transition technology since 2020. This allows CO2 savings of up to about 20%. Within their strategic partnership, Van Moer Logistics and Delhaize commit to evaluate investments on a permanent basis in function of market developments.
In the first quarter of 2025, Van Moer Logistics will deploy 5 additional LNG trucks to serve the busy city centres of Brussels, Ghent and Antwerp. A total of 34 LNG trucks will then be operating for Delhaize.
*On 31 July 2024, current Transport Director at Delhaize, Dirk Hautekeete, will retire. Going forward, Jonathan Van Dessel will continue to take on this role.
